Universal Alcorn student wins 2025 Block Kids Building Competition

South Philly Review | December 26, 2025

Aliana Savanh, a sixth-grade student at Universal Alcorn Charter School, has won the top prize in the local 2025 Block Kids Building Competition and will advance to the National Block Kids Championship.

The Block Kids program is a national initiative that introduces students in grades 1–6 to careers in construction and the skilled trades through hands-on building challenges. Using materials such as LEGO bricks, string and aluminum foil, students design original projects that promote creativity, problem-solving, collaboration and confidence.

The competition, supported locally by OnSite IT Solutions, gives students an early look at careers in construction, engineering, design and innovation. Organizers congratulated all participating charter schools and praised students for their imagination and dedication, with special recognition given to Savanh’s award-winning project.

Dear Universal Charter Schools Community

This message is to share our planning and preparations related to the potential for severe winter weather this weekend. As you may be aware, current forecasting models have been inconsistent regarding both the timing and potential impact of snow and ice.

Outlined below are Universal Charter Schools’ plans regarding school closures.

Daily Breakdown

Monday, January 26, 2026
Schools and Offices will be closed.

Tuesday, January 27, 2026
If weather conditions require school closures, this day will be an Asynchronous Learning Day for all scholars. Scholars will be required to complete all posted assignments and/or learning packets.

Wednesday, January 28, 2026
If weather conditions require school closures, this day will also be an Asynchronous Learning Day for all scholars. Scholars will be required to complete all posted assignments and/or learning packets.

To ensure we are fully prepared for the possibility of asynchronous learning, all scholars in grades K–12 will be reminded to bring their Chromebooks home, along with any assigned learning packets.

As always, the safety of our scholars and staff remains our top priority. Our team will continue to monitor weather conditions closely and work diligently to ensure our schools are safe and accessible when in-person instruction resumes. We appreciate your patience and flexibility as we communicate updates to our school community.

Sincerely,

Dr. Penny Nixon
